Competitor Analysis FAQs
What is competitor mapping?
Competitor mapping is the practice of placing every direct and adjacent competitor on one map, then analyzing where their trade areas overlap yours. It reveals under-served pockets where you have no competition, saturated zones where opening another location cannibalizes existing sites, and white-space opportunities between competitor footprints.
What is trade area overlap?
Trade area overlap is the geographic region served by both you and a competitor. High overlap means you're fighting for the same customers; low overlap means you and the competitor effectively serve different markets. Quantifying overlap changes site-selection and pricing decisions — you don't want to open across the street from a competitor with an 80% overlapping catchment.
How is location-based competitor analysis different from market-share reports?
Market-share reports tell you how big a competitor is nationally. Location-based competitor analysis tells you which of your stores are actually at risk from which competitor, at the neighborhood level. A national #2 player may be your #1 threat in three cities and irrelevant everywhere else — the geography matters more than the headline share number.
Where does the competitor list come from?
Competitor locations are drawn from curated POI data covering every major category. You can filter by business type, brand, or custom categories, and layer in your own data — internal competitor lists, leased retailers, or specific regional chains — to build the competitive picture that matches your business.
Can I analyze competitive overlap across my whole portfolio?
Yes. Portfolio-level analysis computes competitor exposure for every one of your locations at once, ranks them by risk, and highlights the sites where competitor openings or closings have the biggest impact. Useful for M&A diligence, insurance/lease underwriting, and year-end portfolio reviews.
How fresh is the competitive data?
POI data is refreshed regularly and timestamped per-location. When a competitor opens or closes, it flows into the map within days. You can subscribe to alerts for specific brands or categories within a drive-time radius of your sites.
